Square Peg -- Animal Mothers Tour of Grief

21. Aug. 2018

Every year the dairy industry forces cows to endure the same "tour of grief" as experienced by a killer whale mother who stays with her dying calf.

Like all mammals, cows only produce milk to feed their young. They go through a constant cycle of being artificially inseminated followed by a nine month pregnancy, only to have their babies removed shortly after their birth. They will bellow mournfully as their calves are taken away and many will search for days looking for them. Some, after repeated pregnancies, will try to hide their babies upon being born.

Purposely bred to have grotesquely large udders, cows will produce more milk than nature ever intended. So greatly does this stress their bodies they are considered "spent" only five years into a life that should normally span 20 and are then sent to their slaughter. All this so we can consume the secretions meant for the young of another species, often well into our adulthood.

Dairy is another part of animal agriculture that, along with our burgeoning human population (the elephant in the room), is responsible for the ruin of our beautiful planet. I wonder how many people tweeted about or shed tears over a killer whale mother's loss while drinking a glass of milk?

J35 carried her calf for at least 17 days and 1,000 miles, and researchers had worried she'd endangered herself by expending so much effort. But now she appears in good health.

A killer whale in the news mourns her calf for 17 days. This inspires one to consider not just her sorrow but the sorrow of all animals who as mothers experience grief for their young taken away. Another thing to consider is the taking away of life for perpetual dairy products which are not necessary to our human lives but are endlessly consumed creating a myriad of suffering.
