Environmentalism is for Everyone?

11. Sep. 2018

The following is a letter I wrote to the editor of the Winnipeg Free Press in response to an opinion piece in yesterday's edition entitled "Environmentalism is for everyone".  The author, Peter Denton, is described as an author, speaker and environmental activist.  I thought it unfortunate that he was given this platform to discuss climate change, but completely missed the boat when it comes to educating people as to what they can do in their lives to make meaningful change.

(As an aside . . . The accompanying picture shows him with a double chin, so I suspect he ain't no vegan!)

A large portion of Peter Denton's piece is in reference to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals, so it is curious that he made no mention of their report "Animal Agriculture's Long Shadow" that outlines the impacts this industry has on the environment.  Besides being wasteful, inefficient, causing ocean acidification and habitat and species loss, it produces more green-house gases than all forms of transportation combined.  A humvee driving vegan uses less resources than a meat-eating cyclist.
Calling oneself an environmentalist while eating animal flesh and excretions makes as much sense as considering oneself to be a peace activist while consuming the bodies of other beings whose lives and deaths were anything but peaceful.
