Behold Buddha Buds Being

Interesting at first when seeing
Behold Buddha Buds being,
Knock all miracle stories away
All savour thoughts are hearsay;

Witness instead the Dhamma
Upholds an even hammer,
Wise and foolish succumb
Even fields in consortium;

But it's not just condition arise
Nor is it a view to compromise,
A practice not in defeat
But returning to the calm seat;

Birth, aging, sickness and death
The bodies inhabitants bereft,
Soul or not has no worries
We're left here sharing stories;

There it is, a bud,
Of human power could,
Beyond the traps of advert
Encourage practice, reduce hurt;

Now they do like mocking buds
Branches civilized shrouded shoulds,
Still there flowing and directing
Wise approaching or avoiding;

But this is a practice inside
Not one that is outside,
Nothing to show anyone else
The proof is an internal bell;

Ring it rings or vision
Another proof with indecision,
Letting go to even part
Oxen man leaves his cart.

The Fly, Hand and Poo

The fly landing on my hand
After jovial excrement dancing
Doesn't know the difference
Between me and shit;

We're all food to the fly
We're all food to the fly
No difference between me
And shit;

The fly salutes me and then
The fly salutes the shit
By rubbing it's little front legs
Grateful for another tasty lick;

All food for the glorious golden
Metal colored and painted body
Of the noble fly who vomits
And pukes on me and the poo;

Made of food the shit and I
Made of food for the fly
Made of food we all are we
Dung, urine and all our fleshy goodness;

Go away fly you've touched me
And you've touched shit
Shit is a better place to rest and dine
Not my hands, face, arms or legs;

The fly goes away as I attempted
A self gratifying picture of us both
I figure we are now friends
I and my insect muse must document
This occasion.

A Kinder, Gentler Strike Against Humanity

A Kinder, Gentler Strike Against Humanity

The Times They Are a Toughing

It has always been tough here on earth. Make no mistake about that. From historical accounts to the sculpted busts of our gods and heroes. It's all been tough and we humans drug up the toughness to the point of reflection in this toughness.

In the United States we are so full of vanity, dissolution and delusion. We are not too far from the rest of the planet in this, but we have a special twist. We believe that, yes, everyone suffers but we can fix it. Just give us some time.

On the other hand we have people suffering here in our own country because we have been sold an idea that we can achieve anything if we work hard, follow the rules, lie, cheat, make friends, lose friends, go to church or temple or prayer house or the movies and buy all kinds of crap that we do not need.

It has always been and always will be a tough existence. Our existence is a kinder and gentler strike against humanity. Our days are numbered. For some of us the days are numbered until Christ comes. For some others the days are numbered until the Messiah comes. For another handful billion it is anticipation for reckoning end days. A recipe for disaster and an absolution for responsibility.

The Sky people and the hedonists are in the same boat. One huge volcano or asteroid and it will all be over. The end days are coming.

No Matter Where You Go You are There

Yep, it is not anyone's responsibility except your responsibility. You, gentle reader, are responsible for everything! You are responsible for every action that you take.

You are responsible for every life you take. You are responsible for every piece of trash and pollution that you generate. You are responsible for every piece of land that you exist upon and for every bit of water that touches your lips, quenches your thirst or washes your feet.

Just image that you have gone on to the heavenly realm. Your mind will still be there. No magic will change that. All of your thoughts and activities are still yours. All of the joys, not joys nor sorrows, and sorrows are still yours. So if you are responsible for all of what you see, hear, taste, touch, smell or think then how can you escape that?

You can not escape but you can train your mind to see that all things are impermanent. There lies your responsibility and power. All things are impermanent and this includes all things that you have decided are yours or are you. Your eyes, ears, nose, mouth, skin, muscles and bones are temporary. Your house, land, road, path, state, country, continent, ocean, planet, sun, solar system, galaxy and universe are temporary.

So the only thing you can do is take responsibility for this observation and train your mind to understand that it, All Of This, is temporary.

Perhaps you are feeling a little trapped. Your relationship, economic standing, depression or incarceration is preventing you from being free. It certainly is. So is the conditioning that you have.  So are the thoughts and beliefs that you have. So is the family structure. So is your nationalism. So is your humanity. So is your racism. All of this is incarceration. You are born into this.

So, please, don't kill yourself! Your life force will only take up a new prison. All of the things that make this life hard will not go away. Your body is made up of food. You are food. It does not matter what you call it. You can cremate or embalm or wrap in fancy cloth but your body is food and made up of food. Killing yourself will only throw away the highly developed bit of accumulated food that your mind has put together.

Take care of yourself! Since you are in prison, jail or just a tough situation you can begin your training immediately. Upon investigating and concluding that training is to be undertaken you will begin to transform the mind and thus....

Get Out of Jail Free Card

If you are reading this, then here is your get out of jail free card. If you are listening to this then here is your get out of jail free card. Listen. Read. Understand.

Push your breath out. Keep pushing it. Push. Give it away. Push until your lungs can do this no more. You may cough. Your body will suck in the breath. Push your breath out again. Push it hard. Relax.

Your body is following some rules. Out breath leads to in breath.  This natural condition is the get out of jail free card. Now you are meditating. Your mind has begin to see freedom of understanding that the breath is impermanent too! The driving vital force that is you is a rhythmic breath.

If you can, shut your mouth and practice breathing through your nose. The nose is a filter. The nose is a natural gate. If you can not do this then just breath.

No matter what else is going on focus on your training breath. This will cure and free you. All thoughts are empty so pay them no mind. When you get to a point where the exercise is exhausting then let go of the forced breathing and pay attention to the gentle breathing. Your mind will become sharp, clear and calm.

Free At Last

The powerful strike against humanity has already happened. The kinder and gentler strike that you have now launched has begun. You will soon realize that it began a very long time ago. Billions of years ago you began this journey. In fact, there is no point that you did not exist.

You are not your eyes. There are people who have lost sight and they still are themselves. You are not your legs or arms. There are people who have lost these items as well yet they are still people. There is a certain point that your body will disintegrate. That's just the out breath. The in breath was your birth.

A Kinder, Gentler Strike Against Humanity is about learning to practice breath exercise and gaining freedom that is unshakable.

Not Darkness and Not Light

Holding your hand
You are shaking and I am afraid
That this will be your last day
As I know you

Your tombstone, I threaten,
Will read, not "Done,"
But it will read, "I'll be back."

I've always known that death would come to me
And I was lonely in this understanding
But you let me understand that
I had a friend, a love, a cosmic companion,

Yet here you are
Eyes blank
Skin cold
Breath amiss and leaving
Shutting down

All of my power to hold and grasp and keep you
Is futile
You are slowly dying and I miss you
Even before you pass,

You've returned
And you are as opinionated as ever,
My cosmic companion has returned,
Not interested in another body
You push this one along a little longer,

It's not darkness, nor is it light,
It's the wool over my eyes
And I like it
That I am able to spend one more day, hour, minute and second
With you,

I know I will die too
And I used to hope that I went before you
Or that we went at the same time --
Someone else's mess to clean up
But know now that I want to be there
To cuddle you and help send you
Away with peace
When your time comes,

I will watch you and my heart will
Beat anticipating you
Leaving this world
And how much you have shared with me,

This allows us to live!

You are alive right now in the next room
I will kiss you once more before
I go to work.

Not Darkness and Not Light

The Cat's out of the Bag

Dimka, "Grey Smoke"

This is Dimka. Her name is a Russian variant word that means "grey smoke". She appeared to us about three years ago. We found her out front of our little townhouse in the rainy part of August 2016. It was cold and very wet. She was shivering and hungry.

Dimka at the front door 2016

We already had an indoor only cat. I told my wife that if this outside cat hangs around for 5 days we will adopt her. I made a little shelter outside for her to sleep in. As it turns out she had the attention of both of my next door neighbors.

a.k.a. Mosby, "Gray Ghost"

George was my neighbor to the right. He did not like cats. He did however find interest in Dimka. George had bought food for her and named her after Civil War General John S. Mosby because of her grey coat. John S. Mosby was known as the "Gray Ghost" (Incidentally the word for guest in Russian is ghost).

Joan was my neighbor to the left. She was feeding Dimka too. She had made a little shelter also for Dimka. She didn't name Dimka.

Dimka at the Norfolk SPCA 2016

Five days passed and on a Tuesday morning I scooped up the grey cat and took her to the Norfolk SPCA. They would be able to determine if the cat was male or female. They could scan for a microchip. They would be able to give her the shots she needed.

Dimka the Russian Blue

I told my wife about what I had done. I told her the cat's gender. Roza named her Dimka. We did a little research. It turned out that our new street cat was a Russian Blue. At least that's what we came up with. We spoke Russian at home sometimes so it made sense.

Before I had only our cat Lena. Lena would meditate with me. Dimka and her at first didn't get along. Dimka terrified Lena. Eventually the girls tolerated each other.

Dimka never misses an opportunity to sit with me during meditation practice. Sometimes Lena joins us. It's strange and wonderful. My wife and I love both of our cats. The street cat and the indoor only. Both cats are strictly indoor now. Cats don't live long living outside.

Lena, Dimka and Alexander Nuttall practicing meditation

Sometimes Lena gets to eat the leaves of a lilly in the back yard. So she gets taken to the plant. She eats a little and then runs to the back door in order to get back inside. Dimka, on the other hand, would just run away.

So I scooped her up and committed her to a velvet cage. We play, mediate, eat, pee, shit and so on. Both Dimka and Lena take turns using the restroom with me. It's what we cats do.

Dear Humanity or 4th of July Muse

Dear Humanity;

We are absolutely ready to move on and build spaceports, rocket ships and mine the solar system for valuables. In the meantime why not take care of the labor force here on Earth.  It's July 4th and we thought we would send you our patriotic message.

We hear the music, fireworks and gunshots. You don't think that we hear the fear too! We sure do. It's also a rhythmic ripple on the water of life. We've lived long enough not to be afraid of it all. So you shall reap that fearlessness too!

Isn't it amazing what we bring to the table. Our raw abilities and the skills we have acquired are amazing. We don't need a great leader for this we need a great nation of leaders to step up and step out of the greedy box. You think that your place in this universe is fixed? Think again.

This fragile planet is not going to sustain us for too long. She is the egg. We want to make sure that this mother and her kind babies of life are not aborted by carelessness. It's time to build those ships for the future.

A Noah's ark story is upon us. Some of you may think that it will fix itself but you ignore your own actions in the stream. We are all responsible for the today and tomorrow. Yesterday is the chalk board and we can read what we wrote but it is up to us to bring forth the solutions to the equations.

Diversity is the key to our survival. Time to embrace all of this. It is all ours. We did not invent suicide, homicide, genocide or herbicide. We all participated until we realized we did not need to. Let's move on and get to the stars. Our mother Earth is to be respected while a plan of escape is to be devised. Some of us need to leave.

Patriotism is a limited ego trip. It is not the future. It is the dream of yesterdays future. We can only honor the fight if we take what we have gained and build a foundation to the future. All of our brothers and sisters and animals and plants and insects and life are screaming toward a future.

So we are moving on. The mother ship is approaching in our hearts and minds. The rockets red glare is the afterburn. Let's work toward a few billion years more!

When The Conditions Are Right, This Will Happen

Buddha Land - Wat Pasantidhamma

The Dhamma

The word "Dhamma" (Dharma) is a cousin to our word for Earth (Terra). As far as science is concerned the conditions were right and Earth happened. This is the Dhamma that we understand.

When the conditions are right, this will happen. That's what Dhamma is. Dhamma is the foundation, the piles, the pile caps, the grade beam and the truth. So when the conditions are right things happen.

Right does not mean good or bad. Right means fecund, fertile or ready. If the conditions are right you will have an accident. If the conditions are right you will save money. If the conditions are right your life will end. All of this is Dhamma!

The Four Noble Truths

The Noble truth of suffering is based on the conditions are right for suffering truth. The first truth is that There Is Suffering. The second Truth is that there are Causes to Suffering. The third truth is that All Suffering Ceases (When the Conditions are Right). The fourth Noble Truth is that Suffering Ceases when the Noble Eightfold path is observed.

The Noble Eightfold path is based on finding the conditions right for ending suffering through observant action. Either way the conditions will always be right for something to happen. Observing the Noble Eightfold Path creates the right conditions for non-attachment to endless conditions which create suffering.

The Noble Eightfold Path

1. Right View - Observing that all dhammas are temporary and dependency creates suffering

2. Right Resolve - Deciding to create the conditions within the mind to let go of suffering.

3. Right Speech - As this is a multi-verse of beings it is important that the truth, kind words and speech that is liberating is used.

4. Right Action - Performing activity that is blameless within one's own mind and the shared space work with others.

5. Right Livelihood - Making your way in this world without killing, selling weapons, selling intoxicants and honest labor.

6. Right Effort - Strategic effort that follows the conditions to make the desired results happen and also eliminate the efforts that do the opposite.

7. Right Mindfulness - Fully putting your mind to work in ending suffering.

8. Right Concentration - Focusing on the exact activity you are working on.

In Buddhism, meditation is the practice of arriving to the right conditions. When you start any activity the conditions will always be wrong! The conditions are wrong because the result is not there. In other words the conditions are right for change.

In order to arrive at the right conditions we practice. We practice meditation on wisdom (Vipasana) and we practice meditation on Concentration (Samadhi).

Vipasana is extracting the truth of Dhamma from the waste of good advice, rules, regulations, scriptures and the whole lot that is distributed. Vipasana creates an inner condition where the mind understands without having to prove anything. Vipasana brings forth a condition without conflict.

Samadhi then is concentration. During meditation one can observe the breath. When the mind is presenting a multitude of ideas there is a training shift to the breath, or skin, or teeth or any number of objects that have been designated as the one that reinforces concentration.

The only reason to want to end suffering is the arrival of Doom. This is the feeling that all is hopeless. A healthy feeling that birth, aging, sickness and death are inescapable. If this was a fraction or equation it would be Doom/Dhamma. Doom is suffering. Doom is Dukkha. Dukkha is gravity. Gravity/Dhamma is a whole. Dukkha/Dhamma when the conditions are right.

Doom then is suffering. In the the Dhammachakkapavatanna Sutta (The Turning off the Wheel of Dhamma) there are illustrations of suffering. Basically it is this: if you have this desire for something it is suffering and if you have something that you like it can be (it will be) lost. All conditions are suffering. The conditonless (Nibbanna) is the end of suffering.

To fall into the condition where there is no conditional attachment is Nibbanna. This is developed by practice. So when the conditions are right this conditonless state also will happen. It's the center of the equation. You will find it there.

Little Bee and the Thistle

Little Bee and the Thistle

I work outside. Most of my years I've worked outside. I've had some inside jobs: Computer Technician, Web Help Desk, Estimator, Barista, Server, Bartender, Computer Store Manager and Book Store Manager.

Some jobs that I've had helped me to transition into the office: Job Admin, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent. Those were transitional because I was working in the field as a Lead Carpenter, Form Carpenter or Carpenter Foreman.

My experience has led me to appreciate many types of work. It has also led me to understand that it's better to work outside than inside.

The Find

When I arrive to work I see the transitional sky from night to day. I see the water of the Elizabeth River. I feel the wind or cool breeze. I see the thistle plant and a tiny bee.

The bee is a tiny thing. She's maybe 2mm or 1/4" long. My eyes are not so strong at close range but I can make out her distinctive torso with gold and yellow stripes. I pull out my phone and take a picture. She doesn't mind.

The purple of the thistle contrasts the bleak dusty ground. Nothing lives in the well traveled road but adjacent to it life continues. I can't remember ever seeing a tiny bee like this. I barely see any bees at all these days.

Just as I am writing this I stop to hook up a metal box to a crane and I see a flash of zig-zag movent. I see a honey bee! I investigate. It's a bee for sure. About four times the size of my previous bee sighting.

As temporary as this all is, it's still good to catch a glimpse of a bee in action. When the conditions are right this will happen.

The Rub

As always I have time to think. I think how wonderful this place is that we live. I think about how fragile our home world is too. How connected and disconnected we are.

The sun rises and the sun sets. Our sun is temporary. We are temporary. You get this perspective when you engage the natural world.

Everything in the world we live in involves care. Carelessness is also care. It's like the word "quality" that's used in advertisements. It's just a form of kamma. Good or bad it is still action, actors and acting.

Another way of thinking is in the conduit of action and energy. When the conditions are right, this will happen, but we also affect the outcome as we channel the action.

The ultimate position to be in in action is striving. That's goal oriented action. That's when the brain rewards success with endorphins. Successful people go after this in every activity.

Inside the thistle the little bee does her thing. She shares pollen and the thistle provides glucose. Their actions together bring fruition. As human beings we can work for this fruit too. We have choice.

Do we toil ourselves out of existence? Do we set goals and explore the Galaxy and the Universe? Do we worship chance? Do we solidify our spiritual carelessness?

I'm like little bee and this is my thistle.

I love Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virgina

Downtown Norfolk's Harbor Park

We are pretty fortunate here. The Elizabeth River divides the land but the ferry, the tunnels and bridges keep us together. I have to be near the water. It's what drives me.

Downtown Norfolk and Portsmouth's downtown are easily accessible from each other. Hotels line the waterfronts and you literally have access to nearly a thousand restaurants. You have a mall, movie theaters, condominiums, apartments and houses.

Norfolk and Portsmouth are living cities. Some downtown's are ghost towns on the weekend. Atlanta and Richmond are examples of this.
I've had an apartment in Downtown Norfolk and I currently have a house in Portsmouth.

Portsmouth has its ups and downs but I enjoy the waterfront, the festivals, the Farmers' Market and the museums.

I marvel at what holds it all together. Sometimes I think that our local government is smoking crack. Other times I think they really care. That's life.

There's plenty of bad news to absorb. Instead I try to put energy into what it is that I like. Bad or good attention still gives energy to the subject. I'd prefer to shine the light on the good things.

Consider The Lilies in the Field

Alex Nuttall Sleeping
Consider the lilies in the field they neither toil nor spin.

-- Matthew 6:28, Luke 12:27

I've read the Christian Bible, various translations, several times. The above is from two different New Testament books. I like what the message is.

The message is to let you, the reader or listener know that it's not necessary to struggle because God has it all under control.

As a Buddhist I am not concerned with the glory of God. At the same time I'm also not concerned with deprecated other people's faith. In fact if you do a bit of research you'll find that Christians have uncovered many other faiths and practices because their own learning is based on research, discovery and contemplation. Many early Hindu, Chinese and Buddhist texts were brought to the Western world by Christian missionaries.

As the missionaries were salesman (women) their job was to convert as many people as possible. It also was to understand who the people were who they wanted to convert. The very clever messengers assimilated culture and introduced Christianity. The ignoble ones would use extortion or even torture.

The message of the passage in Luke and Matthew is a simple one. It's a meditative statement. My Buddhist interpretation is this:

Consider the Mind Formations (Samskaras) of the Lilies, They neither Toil nor Spin (Produce negative Karma because their natural karma is without blame). It's a message about dependant co-arising and the Dhamma (Dharma - The law of this Universe). The punch line is the the lilies beauty is greater than anything manufactured by Man(kind).

We can attempt to connect a consciousness to Dhamma but it's not going to help us. We can negate the consciousness and debate it but that will not help us either. It's a lot of toil. Instead we can find our natural rhythms with each other and the world. We can introspect and inspect our minds. This is how we find that our minds in the natural state are like lilies.

It Doesn't Matter What Other People Do.

It Doesn't Matter What Other People Do.
It doesn't matter what other people do... Period!

Recently we had another set of shootings in Virginia Beach. One man killed, at the time of this writing, 13 people and injured 3 others. This is an extreme example of real human behavior. Yet to my own spiritual life and well being it doesn't matter what that man did. It matters what I do.

I could not sleep so I started this post after meditating because I was mulling over shootings, family illnesses, parental health (my parents), spousal health, children's health, grandchildren's health, work, co-workers, bosses, jobs, money, bills, housing, cats, my feet, my work boots, my truck. This endless list continues. I then shifted the focus from them and that to me.

I've been a terrible employee, father, son, spouse, grandson, brother, friend, co-worker and citizen many times because of the things I have done. My careless and selfish behavior has led to much suffering on the part of others. I've also been a good guy too. Maniacal normal human.

What's done is done. I can play the recording of events over and over again. The events of others and the events of my own hands. I can not do anything about what others have done but I can do something about my reactions, responsibilities and relationships.

Furthermore I can do something good for myself that will enable me to improve my life and those other lives around me. By doing this thing that is a practice I am changing the whole universe! You can join me if you like. Because it doesn't matter what you do or others do this activity that I do is infinitely powerful. Again, you can join me if you like.

I wish I could tell you how wise and wonderful I am. I can't do that. I can only share my refuge. This is where I go when I am experiencing happiness and sadness. I go to this refuge because it's good. It feels good. It's powerful. It's self revealing. It's free. It's practical. It's here right now.

The Five Precepts:

Before I show you this refuge I must share the foundation of the Five Precepts.

1. Respect Life by behaving safely in action with regards to others for the sake of a sincere practice.

2. Respect Property of others by behaving honestly and taking only what has been given for the sake of a good practice.

3. Respect Sexuality by celibacy or behaving openly with adult relations pursuing only cooperative partnership, commitment and love for the sake of a healthy practice.

4. Respect Speech by saying what is helpful, true, necessary, without harm and distracting free for the sake of a mindful practice.

5. Respect The Mind, Heart and Body Consumption by consuming only what is needed for health, a clear mind and physical balance without leading one to carelessness for the sake of a careful practice.

The Five Precepts are a prescription and learning process. With practice these precepts lead to knowledge that is self evident. They are not commandments. Commandments are based on something outside of yourself. Precepts are the suggested practice of those who have obtained knowledge that is based on experience.

The Refuge:

As I stated earlier I had to go to my refuge. I practiced mediating and the result was that I felt better, I accepted my thoughts and I was able to increase happiness by putting it all together for you.

How to meditate regardless of your circumstance:

1. Sit up straight if you can. The goal is to have your spine straight. Work on this. If you are paraplegic, then you are as straight as your going to get. Don't panic. In your mind visualize yourself as a straight line from one end of your body to the other.

2. Breath through your nose. Shut your mouth. Again, do the best that you can.

3. Observe, watch or feel your breath move through your nose. Focus on this regardless of what your mind thinks. This teaches you that your mind is controlled by you.

4. Practice for a designated time. Give yourself a time limit. Say to yourself, "I will do this for 5 minutes." In my case I use a meditation timer on my phone and I practice for 30 minutes.

5. Set your goal and record your progress. I draw with magic marker on a calendar a half circle in the morning practice and a half circle for the evening practice. My goal is an hour a day.  I have a whole circle of I successfully do two sessions.

6. When you finish remember how you used your breath and do this throughout your day! Use it any time. No one can take this from you. Hyperbole may invade your mind but that's when your mind is not in your breath!

That's it.

The Source:

The source of this practice comes from Buddhism. More specifically it comes from the Thai, Theravada, Forest Tradition. For many years I have practiced by reading books. I spent money on lots of books and I took classes.

I will advise that you not pay for any classes, books, teachings or advice. The Theravada Forest Tradition specifically will not charge you for any books, classes, teachings or teachers. It's free. The Buddha never charged for his classes so we should not either.

The Buddha is a person, a human, who has awakened his mind by practice. The above teaching will lead you to this too. Ultimately it will position you to understand that It Doesn't Matter What Other People Do. It only matters what you do and how you practice doing.

Every Day Homicide On the Edge of Grass and Pavement

Every Day Homicide On the Edge of Grass and Pavement
Butterfly on the Edge of Grass and Pavement

Every day in my hometown area there are homicides. There are shootings. Multiple homicides reported from different cities in the Hampton Roads / Tidewater area.

We don't want to spend money on inexpensive housing, education or work development so we spend money on homicide.

We don't want to spend money on financial education, sex education, artistic education so we spend money on homicide investigation, cleanup and prisons.

I used to have some guns. I don't have any now. I always carry a knife for close quarters defence. I'd rather get up close and personal. Furthermore I'd rather not kill anyone so I will just do some very painful things until my aggressor changes his mind. To take a human life is the worst thing a human can do. Maiming an aggressor... that's the aggressor's choice.

Most humans do not realize how unique our existence is. Instead of understanding this the human mind focuses on eating, consuming, gathering and taking. We are so close to being hungry ghosts.

It's a lot of foolishness. The people who take lives are in the worst condition of humanity. Those people are no longer living. The paradox is that in killing anything and anyone we lose our own human life. We lose choice. We create prisons of our own lives.

I can't help but to feel shame for this. It's a great shame. Human populations are exploding with ignorant homicidal maniacs.

I feel shame for gun manufactures. The idea behind the gun is to give killing power to anyone. The idea is that the gun gives equal footing to those with or without a lot of physical strength. Unfortunately it also gives anyone with aggressive desire an easy tool to be aggressive. Gun manufacturers make money by appealing to humans with aggressive tendencies. Gun sellers have tools to asses a person's aggressive tendencies but a record is only as good as the last assault, battery or homicide.

We can romanticize weapons all we want but they just give aggressors easy tools and the ability to find soft targets.

So who is responsible for changing all of this? Me. I can control me. I can control my behavior. I can learn how to get along with other people and other beings. I don't have to love everyone but I can understand that I love myself and I appreciate my life. My life allows me to work on my mind. That's a great privilege!

Birth, Sickness, Old Age and Death will find everyone. It's going to happen. Humans should not be involved in the act of killing. As soon as you and I realize this we will have reached the next level of awareness.

If anyone reading this has taken a life, human or otherwise, the only way out of that maelstrom is to stop the unskillful practice of taking life. You have the power to kill but you have the greatest power also to respect life!

Instead of focusing on investigating homicides maybe we can focus on promoting life in all of its entirety. Not just anti-abortion that's disguised as "pro-life" but let's be Pro-Whole-Life. From the cradle to the grave let's promote whole meaningful lives of human beings and the lives of other beings we share this world with.

In the meantime you and I, dear reader, can work on ourselves. We may not be able to change others but we can change ourselves.

It's difficult to compete with those who have religion based on a heaven or Valhalla. They kill without impunity. At least they think so. You and I, dear reader, know otherwise. When a person graduates from being told not to kill to internally understanding what killing is then a dynamic shift will occur. Otherwise it's hopeless.

We will read or hear about more homicide tomorrow. We may even see homicide. We may be faced with it. Skillfully we will try to minimize the damage or out maneuver the aggressor.

We also can work on our ability to show kindness. We can work on making our world a better place where life is respected in whole.

One day I hopped on a bicycle at work. When I checked how much at the time, how many kilometers a day I traveled, the answer was about 7. That's a lot of time that I spent walking and not doing other things.

The bicycle was like a time machine. In ten minutes I could travel 4 times the distance! It was an amazing experience.

Time travel is just that. How far can you go in a period of time. Not necessarily going from time to time. The concept of going from time to time is unimportant. The time you spend is the only factor that matters in your life. At a certain point your body will no longer support your journey. Time will be over.

It doesn't matter that there have been eons or kalpas before, during or after any of your activities. Those times are speculative perceptions of someone else or maybe a conclusion you have made. Those times are not your experience. They are inconclusive. They are neither provable nor are they dismissive folly. They are just something else. They are answers to questions. Neither true nor false.

Recently we flew from Norfolk, Virginia to Sarasota, Florida. I usually think of the Beatles, "Live and Let Die" song and then I segue to Ian Fleming's book with the same name. James Bond. Time Travel. Retirement. Not yet.

We could have walked. We could have driven. We chose to fly. Time travel.

As I write this I am hundreds of miles from work and home. Time and space transgressed. In the past I've driven this far. It took me well over half a day pushing a gas pedal. Walking, I could do it, but it would be very unpleasant.

As far as my recollections of time are concerned time is going by me much faster than it was before. I accomplish more in shorter periods of time than I used to. When I was younger 5 minutes seemed to last forever. Time is just a pathway.

Time is a pathway. It's the means with which we open up opportunities. It's our work. It's our process. We can short or long cut it. Time is observation. Time is consciousness. Time is the shadow of awareness.

I'm Such A Snob and I Know It

I'm Such a Snob and I Know It

I know I'm a snob. It's part of my makeup. It's many years of conditioning. I know the truth of my snobbery. I don't like half-assed efforts and I am wont to loath pretension.

Take this watermelon. I love watermelon. My wife loves watermelon. We love watermelon. It's an outstanding and nutritious food. Unfortunately some people fear this because it's associated with race. They fear progress, nutrition, health, compassion and the power within because they would rather be mindless victimised dolts.

I don't care about perception of the loud few because I care about the Universal truth of the many. It's a lot of paradox but let's deploy anyway.

I like meeting intelligent and happy people. I'm not interested in any qualities beyond that. You might be symmetrical, attractive, rich, healthy and all of that in cleverness but if you aren't happy you are not intelligent.

There is an emotional intelligence. This involves manners, listening, eye contact, hand shakes, cleanliness and many of the very techniques that are distinguished in noble behavior. Noble behavior is the supreme power. This power is beyond all others in that it's a cultivated power. This cultivated power allows for the maximum navigation through humanity.

As a snob I hold myself in high regard. I, as a snob, hold that I must behave in the greatest skillful way as is humanly possible. That means that I must strive to better my work, speech, interaction and relationships with others. I also have a gut feeling that keeps me in check. I know that when no one is around I still have to be the best person I can be possible.

I fail miserably sometimes. Sometimes I am careless, angry, vulgar, crude and ugly. Those are the times I'm an absolute mindless animal. As soon as I realize this I change. I go back to the center of happiness and intelligence. My snob takes over. I'm free.

Freedom is choice. Not all choice is freedom. Freedom is also in not choosing the endless flow of mud. The muddy waters are the turbulent realm of craving junk. Mindless junk hunting. During this realization it's important to be a snob. Start being a scientist. Be a scientific snob.

The place where this pays off is in your mind. Eventually you get to this place where all ideas are either rejected or embraced as they are deemed skillful in happiness. Why give up your power to discriminate for yourself. If you want watermelon then eat it! If there is a weighted, tangible and positive reason behind this craving then by all means enjoy it!

The Difference Between Good Employees and Bad Ones

The Difference Between Good Employees and Bad Ones
It might be obvious but it's not. You will spend a lot of money on bad employees. You'll spend a whole lot. I dare say you will spend triple on them what you do on your good employees.

When I bring this up the response is usually, "We get rid of them." But the truth is that you don't get rid of them that's why they are still employees.

As an employer you look at them as numbers and meat and they look at you as fodder and milk.

The difference between a bad employee and a good one is that both employees get paid the same paycheck with the exception that the bad employee enjoys the privilege of doing what he or she wants and the bare minimum of what you need to keep the business going.

Again we are not talking about the person you fired.

We're talking about the person who you pay to do a job that you can't do and you hate and you wish didn't have to be done and you just place a body to do.  You have good employees who do this and you just expect them to do what you pay them. No coaching. No thank you. "Just do your job."

How did this happen? Greed and laziness on your part.

So take action to make this go away... First of all you increase the wages of all of your employees. This covers the greed. Next you get involved with coaching and improving. This covers your very own laziness.

It's your business and you can do what you want. This is not a scolding from someone who doesn't understand your own personal years of hard work and your goals to be the best. No this is a coaching from someone who wants you to move to the next level and achieve greatness.

So your laziness is the desire you have to consume. You don't want to give. You don't want to have anyone short cut your success. You are a fool.

Give! Give now. Give everything you have and you will bring your employees into a realm of respect. Push your people. Assign them tasks. Give them ownership and your employees will make you wealthy and successful. Your business will be theirs.

Or just throw money away at the bad employees who adopt the status quo and enjoy The fruits or your marginal, "where I got us now."

Dimka, The Morning Meditation Preceptor

Dimka Resting During Meditation

Don't give me the anthropomorphic fallacy!

When I meditate she is always at my side. Dimka also is kind enough to start my day by eating my paperwork when I don't want to get out of bed. I wake to the sounds of paper tearing. She only does this after I refuse her kind advances of meowing, purring and licking. This regularly happens about 3:30 in the morning.

When you make promises to your self the universe obliges with perfunctory care.

How to Beat Everyone!

To Happiness We Go!

You want to win because that's the kind of crap you're fed daily. You eat it up. Yum. But don't be alarmed because you have to eat anyway. Be selective.

How to Beat Everyone! -- Body Builder -- Portsmouth VA
How to Beat Everyone! -- Body Builder -- Portsmouth VA

We not only have to eat but we are constantly eating for every breath we take. We eat for every sound we hear. We eat for every sensation we feel. We eat every smell. We eat every thought we have. We eat all perceptions. Constantly, we are eating.

So to beat the rest in the fete of fecund fun we must select what it is that we are eating. We select all the actions we take so that we feed on the items that are healthy, skillful and positive to our well being. This craving and eating includes our on-purpose actions (volitions). These are the actions that we skillfully hone in order to find... Oh, what are we trying to do?

Happiness is the goal. Eating never solves this. It can distract, overcome temporarily or just fulfil the obligation of living in this physical word. So to be happy you need to beat everyone, someone or just those people you hate, right!

Not really. That craving is wanting to eat too. So to beat everyone you need to train yourself for what it is that you think makes you skillful. This is good. The second level of this training is training your mind to be the skilful trainer. This is where you realize that you will die, get sick, grow old and you will not have the same body that you have now. The mind, however is there and it can be trained at any time.

In fact you are training the mind as you read this. You are observing eating, feeling, seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, smelling, forms, feelings, perceptions, mind formations and consciousness itself. All of this is eating or shall we say digesting. You are now observing the breathing that you are doing all the time. This is how you become a champion.

The person who ultimately in your life who will benefit from winning will be you. It does not matter how many others recognize your achievements or greatness, if you don't believe it then it isn't true. This is different from the belief that the earth is round or flat or any sophisticated buggery.

When it comes to who you are you are the final judge. Not your parents, spouse, children, piers, boss, coworkers, God, Devil or any entity outside of you. You are the final judge of you. The laws of nature are not judges. These laws are just the realm that you live in.

So how you beat everyone matters on practicing getting to know your heartbeat. Get to know your mind. Look at your feelings. Look at the itches you have. Feel the movement of your breath. Observe the thoughts that you have. All these are temporary. The heap that is your body is temporary too! So is the heap everyone else is carrying. So is the Planet we live on. It's all temporary.

This mind that you have is exactly what you control. This is your domain. This mind is your kingdom. When you die and go to Heaven, Hell, Valhalla, Paradise or that great coffin you will first have to let go of your body. If you get a haircut you have to let go of that hair too. It's not you. Your mind will let go of the dead stuff and look for something else to eat. That's how life works.

There are plenty of distractions. Plenty of things to get mad about will find you. Plenty of things to distract you from the inevitable road your life is on. This mind is what sifts through and chooses the trail. It does good things and bad things and ultimately it does things with other things that cause more things. The good and bad is relative to the winner and loser.

"I was abused so I lost."

"I was able to kill my abuser so I win."

"My abuser did this to me because of unskilful action."

An endless cycle. Just as endless as the drive to find higher tastes and joys in life. Over and over again.

The place at the end of the journey is the finish line. Done. That is the place we all are heading in these bodies. What we do to facilitate that journey wholey affects the outcome for those next in line. Just as what has happened in the past has affected our lives. You can be a loser, a victim or the impression of a "winner" over others which is a total neurotic illusion. All of these postulates will lead to unskilful and difficult lives because your mind is constantly feeding on fear, greed, anger and sloth. It's no way to finish a winner.

You can beat anyone by being helpful. You can do this only when you are capable of feeding on goodwill and kindness. It's not the act of petting poisonous snakes but it can be the act of giving space to all beings and allowing them to manage as best as they can. If you can heal then do so without doing harm.

Think of everyone as having a self like you. Think of every life having a self like you. Some can harm you and some can help you. You can skilfully maneuver as long as you train your mind. Do this now while you're able to digest this.

Slipping in a bit of skilful practice before death is how you can be a winner and beat everyone to happiness.
