A little bit of rhythm is tapping
As the keys on the Selectric are ticking
IBM throws out its PC division
News at eleven and now ten-o-clock
For your pleasure
In between the game and Nirvana
The better half just left
Now we can celebrate
Now we can listen to the horns
You used to need excuses for loneliness
Then there was the juice, sauce and weed
Then it was a little bit more difficult
To manage the spirit
The spirit or the life force chasing after
Energy was about to leave when
There came a calamity of reason
OR perhaps it was jail
Around sometime in the early 80s I was
In a tree climbed up to the tip as much
As I could
I carried a knife
I always carried a knife
When I did not have a knife
I would accidentally find a knife
But that is not what this is about
Let us explore the top of the tree
The top of the tree was pine
As the trunk, base and roots were also pine
The needles that were green where leaves might be
Were green and some on the ground
Were brown
Evergreen, they called it
In the top of that tree
I was praying to God
I carved a cross into the top where I was
This was my pact
I always liked symbols
The cross meant something to me then
It means something different to me now
“Beware.”
